Here it is again, the onset of the political season, and with it the loud braying of Republicans on their signature issues -- flag-burning, gay marriage and, of course, that perennial, being tough on crime. Now that constitutional amendments on the two former items have been widely panned as transparent appeals to the far-right base rather than as policy for actually running a government, state Rep. John Ahern trots out the third ("We have to work harder to keep drunks off the road," July 6 guest column)....
